Companies try to make online shopping less tedious

......... Companies have tried without much success so far
to lure shoppers to so-called electronic wallet
systems that enable consumers to enter personal
information they can automatically take with them
to multiple Web sites. A main reason is that the
thousands of online merchants use widely varying
codes to complete online purchases, instead of a
common system that all wallet systems can read.

Analysts said the electronic standard could
succeed in part because the companies promoting
it include a number high-tech and financial
heavyweights.

Included in the group are the Internet provider
America Online, computer makers IBM, Compaq
and Sun Microsystems, software maker Microsoft
Corp. and the charge card companies American
Express, MasterCard, and Visa.
