KDDI to Provide Wireless LAN Service Enabled by One-Time ID, Password Issued to Mobile Phones

May 8, 2003 (TOKYO) -- KDDI announced on May 7 that it will start a trial wireless LAN service using a one-time ID and password sent to a mobile phone.

The trial runs from May 14 to Sept. 30.

Eligible for the service are KDDI's au mobile Internet service "EZweb" users. An EZweb user submits an application via its Web site, the necessary information for a hookup to the wireless LAN service will be issued and sent to the user's au cell phone. The user also can use the service with an ID and password issued by a contract ISP via roaming.

Users who would like to join the service need to have a wireless LAN adapter and a PC. The wireless LAN supports IEEE802.11b at a maximum speed of 11Mbps.

KDDI said if trial service would go into a fully commercial service was not determined.

The service is available at waiting areas for domestic flights of the New Chitose Airport Terminal, Kansai International Airport and Miyazaki Airport; the lobbies of Tokyo Dome Hotel, Century Hyatt Tokyo and two other locations in Tokyo. Service areas will be expanded during the trial period.

Japan Telecom Co, Ltd and Japan Railway East Co will too start a similar trial service using a one-time ID and password from the middle of May onwards. It will target users of J-Sky Internet connection service.
