Sun Selects C-Cube For Breakthrough MPEG-2
Streaming Solution Over Intranet and Video-On-Demand
Networks

C-Cube's Digital Video Encoding Technology Drives New Opportunities for
High-Bandwidth Video Communications Applications

MILPITAS, Calif--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 7, 1997--C-Cube Microsystems, the leading
provider of highly integrated digital video compression technology, today announced that Sun
Microsystems Inc. has chosen C-Cube's MPEG-2 encoding technology as part of its breakthrough
MPEG-2 audio/video streaming development project designed for local and wide area networks.
Driven by Sun's Advanced Development Group, this project is focused on developing an efficient
solution for video communications applications, including Intranet and video on demand (VOD),
that require minimal delay when receiving digital video across a network.

C-Cube's ability to achieve high-quality MPEG-2 video at low bit rates will enable Sun to develop
an innovative technology for easily streaming Main Level/Main Profile MPEG-2 over various
network architectures, including 100-basedT and ATM topologies.

"Video is poised to be a ubiquitous technology that will enable new types of applications for the
home and business," said Greg Popadopoulos, chief technology officer, Sun Microsystems
Computer Company. "C-Cube's industry-standard MPEG-2 encoding engines provide a solid
foundation for the advanced digital video technologies Sun is exploring."

"Digital video is rapidly penetrating the worldwide marketplace, opening up new opportunities to
leverage video for communications," said Didier LeGall, chief technology officer and vice president
of R&D. "As the leading technology innovator for network solutions capable of addressing
numerous applications, we are excited that Sun has chosen C-Cube to drive these new
developments forward."
