Dr. Spock (if I was told correctly) counseled that a child is his own best moral arbiter. Get out of his way discipline-wise, and he'll figure right from wrong on his own. I haven't bothered checking up on this, but it fits. Dr. Spock came at the leading edge of a wave of parental permissiveness that has scarred my generation. It left my peers damn selfish. Imho.
