OT: I am the polar opposite wrto spelling -- I can still remember the one spelling mistake I made in school ("neccessary" in Grade 6, oh the shame).

Part of it is non-stop reading all my life, but a lot of it is tricks. For instance I remember the ending for Nikkei because it is the same as that on the Japanese words Nissei, Issei and Sensei, which refer to different generations of emigrants.

I'm a fiend for etymology, always figuring the meaning and spelling of words by noticing their Greek or Latin or Germanic roots. But I will argue strongly that one of the other reasons I am a good speller if that I never use a spell-checker, so my brain remains trained to detect incorrect letter patterns on its own.

I'm sorry to hear the story of your brother, one repeated all too often. One of my best buddies just completed a B.Sc. in Chemistry after discovering as an adult he was dyslexic. Watching how hard he worked to overcome it and get his degree compared to how I sailed through mine was eye-opening to say the least.

Myself, I am one of the last victims of anti-lefthandedness, having been born left-handed but forced to switch at an early age (which I only found out a few years ago). The same doctor recommended my mother increase her smoking during pregnancy to deal with her nerves.
