Yes it is serious but not all people that have hepatitis B have severe complications.
Did you know that if one took syringe needle from AIDS patient and another from Hepatitis B carrier one would have higher risk of dying if used the needle from hepatitis B patient. But this is just statistic.

Hepatitis B is quite common especially in Asia.
90% of infected people fully recover and 10% become chronic carriers. (there is an estimate that there is 200 millions Hep B carriers throughout the world, each a potentila source of infection)
Prevalence (proportion of people that are carriers)in Asia is 10-15% and in Europe and North America 0.5%.

90% of carriers do not have any complications and recover from acute infection but carry the virus and can infect other people. (this is 90% of the 10% that become carriers)
10% of carriers have some long term complications as chronic active hepatitis (mortality >50%), hepatocellular carcinoma (mortality >90%)
In summary if someone was diagnosed with Hepatitis B infection it does not mean that it is fatal. First he/she must become chronic carrier and then have complications. To diagnose infection blood test is enough but to diagnose complications one need to have liver biopsy. If deGuzman was diagnosed with hepatitis B infection then suicide for this reason is unlikely. If he was diagnosed with chronic active hepatitis then he had to have liver biopsy and then this material could be used for DNA identification.
