Well if your proffer that large numbers of something is a systemic design weakness, I am smiling once again.

I guess then advances in electronics is a never ending systemic design weakness. After all every few years the number of transistors in a unit area is doubling.

The only thing that has damages tiles, that has created a dangerous situation is foam shed during launch. And that became a noticable problem after the use of a non freon foam was chosen.

Based upon your design rules, I suggest you never upgrade your computer. Oh the millions more transistors.

The products of today material science might well dictate a different systems design solution. But the original design of the shuttle worked extremely well with the tiles that were and are used.
