Sonki, we have barbell exports. And midrange, labor intensive imports.

We export certain commodities---esp. ones w/high capital/low land cost characteristics. E.g. Agricultural commodities and basic finished goods like food oils. (High inputs US agriculture). Timber is simply cheap land.

We also export all sorts of high tech/brain export products. Not just the obvious intel/msft products & Boeing planes. Also Drugs, medical equipment, catapillar tractors. And Branded/image consumer goods. Financial services, from insurance to credit cards, to investment banking to accounting. And of course entertainment. From movies to music to TV. To the internet. (Largely on the come -- satelite global voice/broadband communications.)

In general, SOFTWARE. (Creative, brilliant expressions by extremely highly compensated home run hitter individuals or teams, which can be packaged and mass produced for huge leverage.) Intel processors, which depend for their margins on being at the cutting edge of technical developments generally fit w/in this notion. Ram is further down the chain, and mostly overseas.

What we import is everything labor intensive that can be shipped. From clothing to shoes to disk drive assemblies to circuit boards to Italien crafted leather handbags to consumer electronics to commodity cars. (Our lower classes and lower middle classes are increasingly in service jobs cause they are the only low value added ones that can't be shipped.)

Regards, Doug
