If your point is that we are grossly over-lawed I couldn't agree more.

That's not my point, but it is a good one nonetheless.

My point is that if the law is silly as far as one individual is concerned and there's no harm to any one from disobeying it, why should that individual be punished? And if an attempt to punish him is made, why shouldn't that person do everything legally appropriate to avoid the punishment?

Do you really think you should be given a jaywalking ticket under the example I gave you? I would hope not, I would hope that you would have the nerve to walk the street on the "don't walk" sign, secure in the knowledge that the purpose of the law is not to keep you from crossing the street when no vehicles are around for miles.

There are lots of laws like that--ripping tags off pillows and mattresses, kissing pigs in public on Sundays, etc.
