Conexant and Cisco Demonstrate Industry-First VSR Technology; High-Speed Interconnect Will Help Alleviate Internet Bandwidth Bottleneck
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 2000--Conexant Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CNXT) Monday announced the industry's first public demonstration of 10 Gbps very short reach (VSR) interconnects at the National Fiber Optics Engineers Conference (NFOEC) in Denver.
Cisco Systems Inc. will show in booth no. 989 its 12000 Series Internet router using Conexant's VSR converter technology. High-speed VSR links will make it possible for service providers to add the bandwidth they need to meet escalating service demands more cost-effectively.
VSR technology is expected to significantly reduce the costs of co-locating high-speed network equipment at central office, point-of-presence and portal sites, and has won support from major communications companies who are finalizing an industry-standard implementation agreement within the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF).
The technology uses parallel optics to provide a more economical alternative to serial optic links for the thousands of networking boxes that are typically co-located within 300 meters of each other throughout the Internet infrastructure. VSR transceivers have the same size and power consumption of 2.5 Gbps OC-48 interfaces yet offer four times the bandwidth along with a migration path to even faster OC-768 (40 Gbps) optical links.
"This first public demonstration of VSR solutions is an important milestone on the road to boosting today's Internet backbone while paving the way for an even higher performance infrastructure in the future," said Bill Swift, director of engineering for Cisco's IP POP Systems Business Unit. "VSR links will allow service providers to meet escalating service demands by adding new high-speed equipment more cost-effectively. With semiconductor leaders like Conexant not only contributing to the standard but demonstrating working silicon, we are laying the groundwork for VSR technology to very quickly help solve today's bandwidth bottleneck."
Conexant has developed the industry's first working implementation of a VSR link that can be used for a wide variety of applications including high-speed gigabit and terabit routers, dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) terminals, and synchronous optical network/synchronous digital hierarchy (SONET/SDH) add-drop multiplexors (ADMs).
"We are pleased to have worked with Cisco on the industry's first public demonstration of VSR technology," said Warner Andrews, vice president of strategic marketing for Conexant's Broadband Internetworking Systems business unit. "VSR is one of the most important technologies for quickly and inexpensively expanding Internet backbone resources worldwide. We are also working with other industry leaders including Ciena, Juniper Networks, JDS Uniphase and NEC to help make VSR a widely available and easy-to-implement solution in a broad range of platforms and applications."
Conexant plans to formally introduce its VSR converter later this year. These devices will reside between the OC-192 SONET framers and optical modules, providing a complete VSR solution.
