I'm not sure the question "How is SUN going to make money with Java?" is the right approach to the problem. It seems much more important to realize what Java is, what paradigms are being changed by this technology, to what extent this is not a "product" but a concept with concrete applications and real world possibilities, and how it will affect our everyday life. Trying to make a direct connection to dollars is in my opininon useless. We first have to answer and realize more important issues.
I would say that Java brings a third level of computer decentralization. First there were the huge million dollar computers and mainframes (1940-1975...correct me if these dates are wrong). The next era was the personal computer (1975 - 2005 and maybe sooner), with MacIntoshes and PC's populating the whole world. Decentralization. And companies taking advantage of this evolution survived (IBM, MAC, and all the clone makers).
Of course, we are still in this phase, and it's probably not over yet. But the network computer as envisioned by Sun is not, IMHO, a simple gadget or toy. It's a logical step further in this evolution. I strongly doubt Sun to be unable to take advantage of the future it has seen before everyone else, and even invented if I might say...
