IC packaging and testing companies experiencing strong orders for December 09 and 1Q10
Original date: 2009/12/7 www.digitimes.com

Most Taiwan-based chip packaging and testing houses have received stronger than expected orders for December 2009 as well as for the first quarter of 2010, expecting minimal seasonal impact in the coming quarter, according to company sources.

Better-than-expected Black Friday sales and the anticipation for strong demand for consumer goods during the Lunar New Year holiday have persuaded chip vendors to increase their wafer starts at foundries, the sources said.

Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) now expects its revenues to grow sequentially in the fourth quarter due to relatively strong performance in December, the sources said. It had previously projected fourth-quarter revenues to stay flat.

Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL), which saw its revenues decline 8.5% sequentially to NT$5.48 billion (US$170.19 million) in November, expects the contraction to narrow to below 4% in December and overall revenues for the fourth quarter to be higher than the levels in the third quarter, the sources added.

For the first quarter of 2010, revenues at most IC packaging and testing companies are likely to drop 5% sequentially or stay flat from the previous quarter, compared to a sequential decline of 10% on average in the first quarters in the past, said the sources.
