Wow! I had no idea that they didn't even bank those extra hours. If the workers did the numbers they would see that they are getting screwed. But I think that the pervasive attitude that business owners are bad people who deserve to get screwed clouds the decision making process even when it comes down to dollars and cents.

Back in my days at Cisco, I had the luxury of taking a little time off and working on a short that was funded by Will Smith. I was a Set PA (production assistant) which is pretty much the lowest job on the set. However, even though I was the only person on the set who had no production experience, I moved up rapidly and was basically working directly with the first AD (Assistant Director). Everyone on the set was union and had union attitudes even though it wasn't a union set. I was just there to have some fun, get a new experience and get the job done. It's safe to say that my attitude of "sure, can do!" was not appreciated by many on the set.

I even had a runin with the teamsters on the set who wouldn't shut up during shooting. The First AD asked me to go tell them to shut up. They insisted that there was no way they could be heard on the set, even though we had every word they were saying on tape.

And i won't even go into my experiences with union coal mines. I'm amazed they can get any coal to the surface. The non-union mines comparatively were pleasant places to work with pleasant people. Much easier to get stuff done.
