Calgene and Kirin Sign Cross License Agreement Calgene and Kirin Sign Cross License Agreement November 18, 1996, 9:30 AM EST

DAVIS, Calif., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Calgene, Inc. (Nasdaq: CGNE) announced the signing of a royalty-bearing cross license agreement with Kirin Brewery Co., Ltd. of Tokyo, Japan for commercial use of selected genes. Calgene has licensed its FLAVR SAVR(TM) gene to Kirin while Kirin has licensed carotenoid biosynthesis genes to Calgene for use in its core crops.

Calgene is conducting research into the utility of carotenoid biosynthesis genes for improving nutritional properties of human foods and animal feed. Carotenoids are colored compounds which have uses such as colorants, anti-oxidants, feed additives and nutritional supplements. The most common example is beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A in the human diet. Calgene has been granted commercial rights in North America to the carotenoid biosynthesis genes.

Kirin is breeding FLAVR SAVR(TM) tomato varieties with commercial varieties developed by Tokita Seed Co., an affiliate of Kirin. Calgene has granted Kirin commercial rights to the FLAVR SAVR(TM) gene in fresh market tomatoes for Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

"Calgene and Kirin have had a long-standing and productive relationship for over 12 years," stated Lloyd Kunimoto, President of Calgene. "We believe Kirin will effectively work with the regulatory system in Japan and be able to commercialize the FLAVR SAVR(TM) technology. Using Kirin's carotenoid genes, we are exploring opportunities to develop improved plants and plant products with increased nutrients in rapeseed and fresh market produce."

Calgene is an agribusiness biotechnology company that is developing improved plant varieties and plant products for the fresh produce, cotton seed and specialty industrial and edible plant oils businesses.

Calgene's actual activities may differ significantly from those discussed in its forward-looking statements. Actual activities may be affected by, among other things, results of operations, or strategic decisions by management or the Board of Directors. SOURCE Calgene Inc.
