Online staff -- Electronic News, 7/10/2003

Intel Corp. and AT&T Wireless today extended their wireless relationship, announcing a distribution program in which Intel will promote and sell AT&T Wireless' portfolio of wide-area and local-area data solutions through its product dealer channel.

The two already collaborate on open access Wi-Fi company Cometa Networks, which provides broadband, wholesale, wireless Internet access nationwide to telecommunications companies, Internet service providers (ISP), cable operators and wireless carriers. IBM also has a hand in the start-up, launched in December 2002.

Intel's product dealer program represents one of the largest contingents of value added resellers in the United States that sell PCs and consulting and networking services to small- and medium-sized businesses, the company claimed. Starting immediately, more than 200 Intel channel members are actively selling AT&T Wireless' General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Wi-Fi data solutions.

The two companies are also working together on co-branded marketing to inform users they are in an AT&T Wireless Wi-Fi hotspot.

"Together with Intel, we are dramatically extending the reach of our wireless offerings," said Abhi Ingle, VP of business data solutions for AT&T Wireless mobile multimedia services, in a statement. "Whether looking for a Wi-Fi solution while in specific locations or high-speed wireless access via GPRS in cities at home and around the globe, today's corporate customers have more options than ever before for increasing their productivity and staying connected."

Meanwhile, as with all of its wireless deals, Intel has Centrino's best wishes at its core.

"The addition of AT&T Wireless services helps these dealers stay competitive and sell full solutions that complement the sale of notebook PCs based on Intel Centrino mobile technology and drive adoption of handheld devices based on Intel Personal Internet Client Architecture," said Tom Lacey, VP of Intel's sales and marketing group.
