Tuesday April 8 10:07 AM EDT DVD-RAM Format To Be Unveiled Soon--Toshiba

TOKYO - Toshiba said today that the inventors of digital video discs (DVDs) would shortly announce their format for a flexible-use DVD that is expected to take the personal computer world by storm.

The agreed standard is for rewritable discs called DVD-RAMS, on which computer users can store and manipulate the same amount of data as contained on 1,800 floppy discs, or the equivalent of one hour's worth of moving images.

Toshiba, which was one of the joint inventors, said it will start selling the discs by the end of March next year. It said the announcement of the agreed format was imminent but did not give a date.

The group launched DVD players and non-rewritable DVD-ROM discs late last year but had yet to agree on the format for the more flexible rewritable disc, on which data can be entered and changed by the user.

The DVD-RAMs are expected to be a hot product, offering personal computer users frustrated by the limited storage space of a floppy to concentrate vast amounts of text and image data on a single disc.

At the same time as they unveil the DVD-RAM format the partners will also announce their format for DVD-Rs, on which data can be rewritten only once, Toshiba said.
