Much of the ACLU follies you read about in the papers should realistically be attributed to a much smaller fraction of ACLU members. They do a great deal of good in the real-life majority, which you may not often read about. One ACLU chapter even helped a large group of SI members, which I detailed here last year. An insane, disgruntled and "administratively purged" ex-SIer wanted to gather up a ton of personal data using a "fishing expedition subpoena". Would have included personal credit card numbers, phone numbers and the like for about 50 members here. ACLU squashed that with a quick pen stroke.

It's like any group, Karen. There are idiots in the corners, and those are the ones who make news. Even in the group known as conservative Republicans, there are idiots lurking about. Such is life.

"What is it that I'm missing?"
Objectivity? Don't believe all the papers you read.
