BOLTON HITS IRAN, SYRIA IN DEBUT

NEW YORK POST
August 5, 2005

U.S. Ambassador John Bolton, in his debut in the U.N. Security Council, pressed Iran and Syria yesterday to do more to stem the flow of terrorists, arms and funding into neighboring Iraq.

His comments came as the 15-nation council unanimously adopted a U.S.-drafted resolution condemning the recent killing of Algerian diplomats, U.S. Marines and a Sunni Arab helping to draft a new Iraqi constitution. Bolton called on all nations "to meet their obligations to stop the flow of terrorist financing and weapons and particularly on Iran and Syria."

But Syrian Ambassador Fayssal Mekdad said comments by Bolton and British Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry revealed "a determined campaign against Syria."

While Damascus has deployed about 10,000 soldiers and erected over 300 surveillance towers along its Iraqi border, Mekdad said, Britain and the United States have spurned a Syrian plea for aid, including night-vision gear.

President Bush installed Bolton as his chief U.N. representative Monday, bypassing Senate confirmation after Democrats stalled the nomination for five months. Post Wire Services
