Globe says unreleased report boosts stock

Corel Corporation COS
Shares issued 10,650,127 Aug 12 close $8.70
Wed 13 Aug 97 In the News
The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Corel Corp's
languishing shares surged higher in unusually heavy trading on Tuesday
following a bullish recommendation by RBC Dominion Securities analyst David
Kramer. Reporter Michael den Tandt says the stock rose $0.55 to $8.70, or
nearly seven per-cent. More than two million shares traded, the bulk of
them crossed by CIBC Wood Gundy Securities in a series of block trades on
Tuesday morning. Corel officials attributed the surge to a "buy"
recommendation issued on Tuesday by Mr Kramer. Corel spokeswoman Carrie
Bendzsa says that Mr Kramer is in the process of drafting a report on the
company. Mr Kramer did not return a call. Corel's stock has languished over
the past year as analysts remain skeptical about chief executive Michael
Cowpland's crusade to challenge the overwhelming dominance of Microsoft. Mr
den Tandt also hears a rumour that spinoff Corel Computer is about to sign
a deal with Northern Telecom.
