Jeff, Howdy

Let's say you buy IBW (international buggy whips), 1000 shares, at $10/share. The next week, the automobile gets invented and IBW goes to $5.

Being conservative, you believe the automobile is a flash-in-the-pan fad which will never replace the dependable horse. You then decide to average down your position by buying another 1000 shares at $5, which lowers the average cost of your IBW position to $7.50/share.

Horsefully yours,

Aggie
