Minor WLL points going back to 1/26/97 - - post #578.
I've been looking into Wireless Local Loops since post #578 since I think this will provide a much steadier income over the long haul than daily news releases about who will use QCOM products/services/technology. This is the sort of income that drives blue chip companies; which I believe is an optomistic future view of this company in 10-15 years, despite my views that there can be oportunities for a quick short shell (side note, I tried this at 48 and ended up buying it all back at 52, grateful I figured out I was terribly wrong at the time).
Well, in my search, that I would estimate to be about third or fourth notch down from "top notch", I have found that nearly all communication companies have their toe in the water of WLL. Sure, there are some smaller companies like Telular, DSP Communications that seem to focus on this market (this market is estimated at 600 million - conservatively and according to Telular's annual report), then there are some medium sized companies like Noika, Qualcomm that have about the same amount interest, but not all their resources looking/working on WLL. And then there are the major players which never like to be cut oiut of any action (if they are worth their salt) and have much more resources, but do not always move as quickly as the smaller players.
Which means that I am pointed nowhere in regards to what QCOM will do in this area.
Chiefly my concerns are this: Developing countries, and areas where back-up systems are needed/required are perfect for WLL deployment. But I cannot tell anyone which companies will get the major share of the pie at this juncture. QCOM has great technology, but is that what is needed? A VW BUG works great in many areas where a Landcruiser with a Lexus engine is just overkill--and of course expensive and a gas hog and you need a computer techincian to test if it needs a tune up or not.
I do not have much doubt that QCOM is driven now by news. And it is good news! Revenue is coming in mostly due to equipment purchasing and installation of infrastructure , and the company is maturing. But I am wondering how much of their income will be derived from future service, especially from WLL.
Needless to say I desire information about how much QCOM income comes from WLL now, and what is projected. I cannot figure it out even with their SEC info and their own annual report. Perhaps any readers of this somewhat meandering piece may have insight or actual factual knowledge.
