(COMTEX) B: ORACLE TARGETS E-BUSINESS SECURITY WITH NEW DATABASE UPDATE COMMERCIALLY VIABLE SECURITY NOW OFFERED WITH ORACLE8I(TM) RELEASE 2 RSA CONFERENCE 2000, SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan 17, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- (http://www.oracle.com/tellmemore/?134549) Oracle Corporation (Nasdaq: ORCL), the number one choice for e-business, today announced that Oracle8i(TM) Release 2 is now shipping, and includes new security technologies designed for large and complex e-business applications. With this release, now even the largest e-businesses may offer the superior levels of security in a scalable and manageable way. "The growth of e-business necessitates the exchange of sensitive information between partners, suppliers and customers," said Jeremy Burton, vice president, Internet Platform Marketing, Oracle Corp. "Using Oracle8i Release 2, companies can expand and integrate their applications while providing users with the utmost confidence that their data is secure, even from Database Administrators who manage the data. Additionally, the data encryption and Virtual Private Database features in Oracle8i are a hacker's nightmare because they isolate and protect individuals and their transactions." Now Oracle offers security to support very large user communities, data integration across multiple tiers and applications, and protection of data in- storage and in-transit through the network. Oracle8i Release 2 allows multiple partners, customers and users to share a common database while still protecting information as if each had a private view. For example, a company managing multiple suppliers could allow each to access an inventory database, but participating suppliers would only see information for the products they supply. The company, on the other hand, would have access to all of the combined data. Ultimately, this new security functionality lowers cost of ownership through simplified administration and improves integration of applications. New Security Technologies for Oracle8i(R) Enterprise Edition Oracle8i Release 2 offers improved access control for data stored in the server by providing selective encryption of sensitive data stored such as credit card and social security numbers. As a result, such sensitive information is protected from internal view. Oracle8i Release 2 has also enhanced the Virtual Private Database feature, which provides fine-grained row-level access control. Access can now be limited based on a variety of session attributes, such as the location from which a user is connected, thereby allowing users to gain greater access to data when connected from inside versus outside the corporate firewall. Oracle is the only database vendor that provides Virtual Private Database functionality. New Security Technologies for Oracle Advanced Security Oracle Advanced Security for Oracle8i Release 2 offers customers superior network security with support for the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol standard and encryption of Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) for both thick and thin Java clients. It extends support to SSL-based single sign-on in addition to Kerberos, SESAME and DCE. To improve ease of administration and reduce costs, Oracle Advanced Security also offers centralized management of users and privileges across multiple applications and databases using Oracle Internet Directory, a directory service which complies with the standard V3-compliant Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). Finally, Oracle8i Release 2 also adopts Internet standard security technologies and supports leading security technology partners. About Oracle8i Release 2 Oracle8i Release 2 includes expanded analytical data warehousing functions, native support for Java2, remote debugging of Java programs and a 100 percent-Java XML parser to Oracle8i's integrated Java Virtual Machine (JVM), Oracle JServer. It also includes Oracle Enterprise Manager 2.1, new high-availability database configurations of Oracle Parallel Server and performance improvements to Oracle Server, Oracle Parallel Server and applications.
