Eugenics was the most accepted theory at the time.

Until someone came up with a theory that fit the data better. That is what the best scientific theory does: It explains the phenomena with the best agreement with the most data.

Which is why the hunter theory of HIV is considered the best. It fits the data the best. The other theories ran into some significant data problems that were not overcome.

PS: Did you know that Copernicus had much more serious errors in his orbital math than Mann did with his graph? Now that would be something someone should write a book about.
