Friday November 21, 7:14 am ET

BEIJING -(Dow Jones)- The number of mobile phone subscribers in China reached 256.9 million at the end of October, overtaking fixed-line telephone subscriber numbers for the first time, data from the Ministry of Information Industry Friday show.

As of end-October, China had 255.1 million fixed-line subscribers, the ministry said in a report posted on its Web site.

The country added 6.96 million mobile phone subscribers in October, a sharp rise from the 5.85 million added the month before and 5.44 million in October 2002.

For fixed-line subscribers, China added 4.67 million users last month. That compare with new additions of 5.54 million in September and 2.06 million in October last year.

China's telecom market is dominated by four state-controlled companies. China Mobile Communications Corp. and China United Telecommunications Corp. are the mobile network operators, while the fixed-line phone service is dominated by China Telecom Group and China Netcom Group. All except China Netcom list part of their assets in New York and Hong Kong.
