Bull pucky. OnSale.com didn't advertise practically at all when they first got started. Most people, including myself, learned about it from others. I learned about Amazon.con the same way and can't remember seeing an ad until about a year after I visited the site. Where did Yahoo! advertise when they got started?

I agree to the extent that coming up with unique or superior content now is more difficult than it was during the virgin days, but studies have already shown that people 1] don't click on ads, 2] don't linger and buy most of the time (less than 1% on average) and 3] learn about most sites either through web searches, content links from other sites, and word of mouth.
