Forty-two percent (42%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -16 ( see trends). Fifty-four percent (54%) believe increases in government spending hurt the economy. Only 23% believe more government spending will help the economy. In a hypothetical Election 2012 matchup, presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney earns 46% of the vote, while President Obama attracts support from 45%.
