The problem is that when you are fighting a war and soldiers are dying, you dont not act vigorously in response because of a fear of budget deficits

I think what Rumsfeld and the military understand is that this thing in Iraq is not a war. We are engaged in a war on terror on a global scale - and a war on terror is fought differently than a conventional war.

The war in Iraq is really just an intervention (a diversion from our war on terror) on our part. We intervened and we got rid of Saddam Hussein and his regime. We have succeeded. Now we have to help Iraq get back on her feet so that we can get out.

We have the best military in the world. We have the noblest military. Our military really can't be beat.

However, Kristol and his people have defined something that can't be done - and that is to get rid of all the insurgents in Iraq. That can only be done by Iraqi's over the long term. It can't be done in a short period of time.

Of course, our military can wipe out eveyone in Iraq - but that is just pure stupidity.
