Alterman, Eric, Columnist, [Nation, The]

The first installment in the fall 2004 Aspen Book Series featured author and columnist Eric Alterman talking about his book When Presidents Lie: A History of Official Deception and Its Consequences, published by Viking. The book examines substantial untruths told by presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and Ronald Reagan, and analyzes their implications. The book explores what the author says are the major lies of four presidents: Kennedy on the Cuban Missile Crisis, Johnson on the Gulf of Tonkin, Reagan on Iran-Contra, and George W. Bush on Iraq. After his own comments, Mr. Alterman was joined at the podium by Ben Bradlee, the editor at The Washington Post during the investigatin of the Watergate scandal.
