Bush, a former CIA Director and former Vice President, did not use his extensive knowledge of government to either try to overturn the election he lost or to make things harder for the man who beat him. Instead, he supported him and even became good friends with him later.

President George H.W. Bush lost re-election in 1992. He won a landslide election in 1988, at one point had a 90% approval rating but, after one term, lost an election in which the man who beat him got 43% of the popular vote in a three-way election. But he left gracefully.

President Gerald Ford lost the election of 1976, very narrowly. He did not use his last months in office trying to overturn his narrow loss. President Jimmy Carter lost re-election in 1980. He did not use his power as President to try to overturn the election he lost.

President William Howard Taft lost re-election in 1912. He did not use his power as President to try to overturn the election he lost. President Herbert Hoover lost re-election in 1932. He did not use his power as President to try to overturn that election.

President Martin Van Buren lost re-election in 1840. He did not use his power as President to try to overturn the election he lost.

President John Adams lost re-election in 1800. He did not use his power as President to try to overturn the election he lost. President John Quincy Adams lost re-election in 1828. He did not use his power as President to try to overturn the election he lost.
