EchoStar Reports Record Results for Second Quarter, 2000
DISH Network Captures 56 Percent of Net New DBS Customers in 2000 As First Half Growth Up 37 Percent Over 1999
biz.yahoo.com
LITTLETON, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 1, 2000-- EchoStar Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH - news, DISHP - news) announced today that it continued to experience record-setting customer growth for its DISH Network(TM) direct broadcast satellite (DBS) television service during the second quarter of 2000, adding approximately 445,000 net subscribers and ending the quarter with over 4.3 million subscribers as of June 30, 2000. DISH Network's second quarter subscriber growth was 34 percent greater than the number of net new customers added in the second quarter of 1999, and the subscriber growth for the first half of 2000 was 37 percent greater than the subscriber growth that occurred in the first half of 1999. As a result, DISH Network has captured over 56 percent of net new DBS television subscribers in 2000, maintaining DISH Network's position as the fastest growing television provider in the United States.

EchoStar reported total revenue of $646 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2000, compared to $350 million for the corresponding period in 1999. Pre-marketing cash flow grew to $221 million during the first quarter ended June 30, 2000, compared to $129 million during the first quarter ended June 30, 1999. With record customer growth, EchoStar experienced increased upfront acquisition costs, resulting in increased operating and net losses compared to the corresponding period in 1999. Consequently, EchoStar's operating loss for the quarter ended June 30, 2000, totaled $86 million compared to $51 million reported during the corresponding period in 1999. The Company's net losses totaled $133 million for the first quarter of 2000 compared to a net loss of $76 million during the corresponding period in 1999. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) for the quarter ended June 30, 2000, totaled negative $31 million, compared to EBITDA of negative $23 million for the corresponding period in 1999. EBITDA for the second quarter of 2000 represents a $56 million improvement over the quarter ended March 31, 2000, when EBITDA was negative $87.5 million.
