Excellent observation, Hagar. This is why it's being suggested that some backbone providers may venture forth with proprietary (flash upgradeable to standards when they are ratified in the future) variations of the protocol. I'm led to believe that some of the pre-standard variants [like the IP Navigator product from Ascend/LU] allow for such capabilities when labeled flows mapped to ATM VCs. I know, that is a compromise in itself in many ways, but it does address the issue of preserving some of the IP formulae.
