When you look at the distribution of intelligence, there aren't all that many intelligent people to begin with. But of those who are intelligent, I think most of them like discussions, even if the discussions make no difference at all. But sure, most people don't like name calling and naked aggression- and there are some people on the net who are just aggressive, pretty much 24/7, and they can't turn it off- the way middle school groups are aggressive. If you can't control that kind of aggression on a site people won't want to have a dinner party like discussion- but I think where ever that nasty element is controlled, people will be happy to chat about anything, whether it makes a difference or not.
