Electrolux unions call Europe-wide strike Friday 10.19.2005, 10:50 AM
BERLIN (AFX) - A group of European unions has called for Electrolux AB's 25,000 workers to go on strike on Friday to protest against the closure or downsizing of some of the Swedish group's European sites, German union IG Metall said.
The call was issued to workers in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Hungary and Sweden, and follows Electrolux's decision to close or downsize a number of its European operations in favour of relocating them to lower cost sites.
Stoppages have already happened in Germany, where Electrolux is considering closing the Nuremberg plant, which employs 1,750 workers, and moving production to Poland.
A Spanish plant has already been shut and some employees have been made redundant in Italy and Sweden.
The unions are calling for a European agreement to guarantee a 'sustainable and social future' for Electrolux in Europe.
Electrolux's supervisory board is expected to make a final decision on the plant closures on Oct 24. |
