So once you allow the state's nose under the tent, it gets down to, "How much and what kind of control should the state have over the marriage vow?"

When you think of it, the incest thing is pretty silly. Like how many men are going to marry their sisters? Maybe at one time they didn't know any better but now we do, at least in this part of the world. And if a brother and sister either want to have kids or want to do what produces kids, the lack of a marriage certificate isn't going to stop them.

We have so many things that we do by law or custom that just don't make any sense or don't make sense any more. But tradition is tough to overcome.

The incest thing might come up again given that we have so many immigrants from the part of the world where that is common and desirable. We have incestuous married couples now in this country, couples married where incest wasn't an impediment. We respect their marriages as legitimate even if they couldn't have married here. There will be immigrants homosexuals who were married in other countries. Will we accept their marriages? If not, then the issue of the incestuous marriages will flare up. This marriage thing could get interesting.

IMO, marriage should be a matter for religious institutions, not the government. That's an area where the MYOB approach is best.

Back to incest, the same folks who want to deny marriage to close kin to avoid any genetic mishaps are often the same folks who want to save fetuses that are irreparably damaged. I scratch my head over that one.
