[Access Concentrator]

You'll have to ask someone who understands ATM. Judging from the Allegro brochure, the products are different.

amati.com

The brochure goes on to define future developments:

<<<
As the applications for ADSL services expand beyond the initial Internet access and video on demand, the access system will need compatibility with additional features. It will be important to interface to frame based and cell based protocols, such as frame relay and ATM. It will be a requirement that the system expand the number of modems installed in a single shelf. These future requirements are part of the Allegro design. The system has an expandable internal bus structure to handle higher density configurations and protocols. The shelf management interface is capable of addressing an increased number of modems per slot as well as the frame relay and ATM MIB requirements. In general, the Amati Allegro is designed for economical installation of ADSL services today and for the rapid expansion of ADSL services foreseen in the future.

I like the fact they're rolling out the DMT version first:

<<<Discrete multitone technology (DMT)-based ADSL versions of the products will be released first in order to meet the Joint Procurement Consortium (JPC) requirement for a digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) product and compatible customer premises equipment. HDSL versions of the ADC and Efficient Networks products will follow. Adapter cards and modems will be introduced separately, starting in the fourth quarter of this year. The ADC/Efficient Networks products will be available for beta testing as a complete end-to-end solution in January 1998 as part of ADC's Cellworx access and transport product family.
