What we need is someone who will unite the country around the goal of finding solutions to problems, not someone who will try to consolidate power or push a ideological agenda (i.e. Bush).
Bush promised to be that man after the divisive election of 2000. I, and many others who thought that Gore got jobbed, hoped that he would do so - and I wrote that here on this site. Give the man a chance, let's see if he can do it.
Bush was not up to the job. In fact, he and Rove made the problem a thousand times worse. At this moment, we are at election of 1800 and Civil War levels of partisanship.
Obama seems to me to be a guy that can put things back together. He has already rejected the far left (e.g. FISA, immediate and unconditional withdrawal from Iraq AND Afghanistan, drilling, etc) and the far right. I believe he will govern from the center, and attempt to fix the mess that Bush has left us in.
So, there is now whining from the right about how Obama is actually fighting back against the smears. Well, I say, too bad. It is akin to the situation in WWII against Germany and Japan; in the end, we used brutal strategies to end the war. Once the war was ended, we began the benevolent rebuilding of Europe and Japan, and strengthened both our country and the world. So, if Obama needs to go negative to fight the Rovian smears - so be it. |
