Here are just a few alternatives to 56kbps analog technology:

1) Wireless Cable.... Feb. 25, 1997--AT&T today announced the invention of a revolutionary fixed wireless technology to carry high-speed digital communications directly to most households across the country at many times the capacity of traditional copper wire.

2) Cable - shared media... 10Mbps...

3) ISDN 128... ... xDSL (784kbps-SDSL/HDSL - 8Mpbs ADSL)

4) Satellite - DirectPC 400kbps downstream

I've been following these stories for over a year. You can see why I view 56kbps as only one of many solutions for Internet access.
