What's facinating is that as equipment starts to automatically perform discovery and negotiate protocols (Jini) they could go to WDM lambdas and a raw streaming protocol if they wanted to. This would allow them to "learn" if they are on the only boxes on the fiber and go directly to a protocol not even requiring IP headers ... This is very much like the communications between a single vendors boxes over copper or fiber today ... they can use their own protocols within their own clouds ... directly over the medium. I'll have to look into Digital Fountain ... this sounds impressive ... Scott C. Lemon
