How many people on this thread use gold as a "safe haven" when they sell stock because of perceived risk of further declines ? It seems to me that most of us simply exchange our stocks for cash; the dollar is our safe haven, (even the Canadian dollar).

If that is so, is it any wonder that the US dollar is strong when people are selllng US stocks (i.e. selling stocks to hold cash as a safe haven). Perhaps the Canadian dollar would strengthen if there was the same flight to safety from Canadian stocks.

Strangely, in terms of the Canadian dollar, American stocks have performed better than Canadian stocks (SPY in C$ has outperformed XIU.t). Maybe that is because of the weighting of poorly performing oil and resource stocks in the Canadian index. Are we in the wrong sector ?
