These days people use stuff that comes in spray bottles, and microfiber cloths. Much less abrasive, easier on the "stuff". Just spray, move on, let it soak, come back with a bucket of clean water. Do your kitchen, your bathroom, your front entry area, etc., this way.

The microfiber cloths are wonderful, will clean many surfaces without water or cleaning solution. I also have microfiber dusters, that "grab" the dust and don't let go until you rinse them.

For dirty walls, though, Old Faithful is a solution of TSP in water. But men don't wash walls. ;^)

You can buy a pack of microfiber cloths and a big bottle of cleaning solution with a refillable spray bottle at Costco. Natch. Willl probably last you until the day you die. TSP you get from Home Depot or a paint store.

And if your bathrooms get like mine do (three men!) then you need long handled scrub brushes, which you can buy at Bed Bath and Beyond. Oxo makes wonderful ones with thick handles that are easy to hold.

(I live in a house with three men, one Golden retriever, four cats, and the household hobbies include gardening, wood working, gourmet cooking, and outdoor target shooting. I seem to do a lot of cleaning.)
