At the moment, that all depends on a political solution. They don't look to be able to get one that summons folks' passions in this way..

John, isn't that the point?

The Iraqis will certainly fight for a way (ways?)of life, a form of government and a system of laws. Unfortunately not all Iraqi factions are willing to agree on what that should be. Civil war (continuing civil war?) seems likely.

And when the bloodshed is finished there is absolutely no guarantee that American interests will be enhanced, in fact a pragmatic look at Iraqi reactions to our "nation building" indicates the opposite. When we're finished we may well have aided in the creation of an Iraq that is diametrically opposed to the pollyanna-like projections of our current policy makers.

But we are, in fact, "training" the Iraqis to fight. Unfortunately for the most part we're training the wrong ones. Ed
