Many fascist leaders had previously been associated with leftist movements or governments. Italian Fascist leader Benito Mussolini previously was a Socialist and later a syndicalist, and chief editor of Italian Socialist Party's newspaper Avanti! before becoming an Italian Fascist. Japanese fascist Ikki Kita was previously a Marxist. British fascist Oswald Moseley was previously a member of the British Labour Party.

While fascism opposes Bolshevism, both Bolshevism and fascism have been noted to hold significant ideological similarities: both advocate a revolutionary ideology, both believe in the necessity of a vanguard elite, both have disdain for bourgeois values, and both had totalitarian ambitions.
