Polish Ombudsman requests update from Gliwice Regional Prosecutor



MEDIA ADVISORY, June 28th, 2009



We have been informed by the Office of the Polish Ombudsman that on June 18th, 2009 he has requested from the Regional Prosecutor of Gliwice a report on the status of preparation to lay criminal charges against Canadian policemen involved in a death of Robert Dziekanski.



Ombudsman is a Commissioner for Civil Rights Protection of the Republic of Poland and according to Polish Constitution is nominated by Polish Parliament and responsible only to it. In accordance with principles specified by the statutes, everyone shall have the right to apply to the Commissioner for Civil Rights Protection (Ombudsman) for assistance in the matters related to protection of freedoms or rights infringed by organs of public authority.

On January 27, 2006, Dr. Janusz Kochanowski has been nominated to be a Commissioner for the 5 year term of office.

Office of the Polish Ombudsman has been very active since October 2007 in monitoring Dziekanski's case and has intervened with Polish and Canadian authorities.
