Allen,

Personally I wouldn't bet the ranch on cable modems. It is very interesting technology, but I still think its going to take too
many dollars to upgrade the cable networks to carry Internet
data traffic. Case in point, MediaOne (formerly Continental
Cablevision, now US West), needs to spend $500 million to
completely rewire their cable network to carry data according
to an article in the Boston Globe. Pretty obviously MediaOne
can't just justify this upgrade on cable modem traffic alone,
but it will be paid by new TV offerings. This upgrade works out
to $600 per cable customer. MediaOne, has a rich parent with
US West and now Comcast has Microsoft as rich uncle, but what about other cable companies? To illustrate the problem here, I can't
get a cable modem in my town, but my friend in the next town
over can. I've got a different cable provider with a less
wealthly corporate parent.
