The iPhone 8 May Come Without A Charging Port (AAPL, QCOM)
By Rakesh Sharma | November 2, 2016 — 3:45 PM EDT

After the headphone jack, Apple Inc. ( AAPL) might be getting rid of its charging port next.

A report in the Nikkei Asian Review quotes anonymous sources at Apple supplier Foxconn Technology Group as saying that the company is making wireless charging modules for iPhone 8, the Cupertino company’s tenth anniversary to be released next year. Apple’s final decision regarding the modules depends on Foxconn’s efficiency in integrating the component into the phone. A high level of efficiency translates into less wasted devices and would make it profitable for Apple to include the component into its final product. The wireless charging ecosystem gained ground last year when 190 member companies, which includes semiconductor giants such as Qualcomm Incorporated ( QCOM) and Broadcom Inc., came together to form the Airfuel Alliance last year. Mercedes Benz is already said to have licensed Qualcomm's Halo technology to enable cable-free charging for its hybrid vehicles. (See also: Qualcomm's Halo To Power Next-Gen Mercedes Benz).

Typically, smartphone wireless charging occurs through charging mats, which use inductive charging to power smartphones. A couple of smartphones in the market, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Note 6, already offer this technology. However, Apple is aiming for a different tack.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that the company was working on developing a phone that could be charged at some distance. The report also stated that Apple was working with Broadcom to develop the technology. According to the report’s author said that distance could either be in inches or feet. The report also mentioned Apple patents filed in 2010, which used an iMac personal computer as a hub for wirelessly recharging from approximately 1 meter. Another one of Apple’s devices – the Apple Watch already uses similar technology in its Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock to enable wireless charging from a distance.
