Hi Peter, thanks for the clarification. I also am not familiar with the current apoptosis literature, nor with the specificity of the TUNEL assay, although I do know that it is very commonly used now to detect apoptosis.

I was just curious whether you were saying that the nicked "overhangs" are a phenomena that is common in non-apoptotic cancer cells, and that this doesn't necessarily lead to fragmentation. Or, you may have been indicating that DNA fragmentation is not a reliable indicator of apoptosis. If so, then you are correct that it complicates some research since detection of apoptotic cells is particularly crucial in experiments involving testing new apoptosis-inducing agents on cancer cells.

Sorry for the non-relevent scientific discussion, guys... it just caught my eye and I had to ask.
