DISH Teams With Geocast

EchoStar is working with Geocast Network Systems on delivering personalized broadband services to computer users via the DISH Network DBS service.

Under terms of the agreement, Geocast will deliver its personalized broadband services to PC users using dedicated bandwidth on one of EchoStar's primary DBS satellites. The agreement will enable Geocast to reach a nationwide audience and allows DISH Network to deliver new PC services to its subscribers.

Geocast's GeoBox, an external 40-gigabyte hard-drive connected to a user's computer, will filter and store personalized content delivered at up to 12 megabits a second. The GeoBox will enable PC users to receive and store high-quality audio, TV-like video images and software downloads without the inherent problems associated with delivery through a typical Internet connection.

Officials at both companies said the Geocast offering will complement future broadband services from StarBand and WildBlue, companies that have ties to EchoStar. With the Geocast service, content that may appeal to a large audience will be broadcast via satellite. In turn, it has the potential to conserve spectrum use for consumers of WildBlue and StarBand.
