Article in the Seattle P-I this morning about how scientists from the University of Washington and University of Southern California are working to speed up the translation from the electrical realm to the optical realm by using polymer based
electro-optical modulators. Presently, the modulators are restrained by energy demand and speed of transmission imposed by electronics. Using a plastics based modulator, they were able to transmit up to 100 gigabits of data per second using less than one volt.
