1) I want gun laws that work, not the NRA watered down slop that we have now.

You want a fantasy or an active and ruthless police state.

2) Well, that argument applies to just about everything, right? Why fight drugs? It didn't work with Prohibition. Why fight crime? It'll never go away.

Putting a big effort in to fighting most types of crime can deter and capture criminals. There is less incentive for a life of crime. However making a commodity illegal increases the price of the commodity and allows criminals to make a lot of money, so when you arrest one drug dealer there are news ones to take his place. It didn't work with Prohibition. It isn't working with drugs now. If we try it with guns it wont work. What will happen is the drugs will be taken out of the hands of the regular law abiding citizens and they will have less defense against criminals. Criminals will be less concerned about facing someone armed so they will be less deterred and crime will go up.

That sort of "let's just give in to evil" argument is what is driving this country to ruin.

Guns aren't evil. They are tools that are used for both good and evil, or for morally neutral things like target shooting.
