What's the deal with DISH? Seems that every time we take a peek at the new 52-week high list, EchoStar Communications' (DISH 167 5/8 +7 15/16) name is on it. Well, the provider of direct broadcast satellite (DBS) programming services is the latest stock to be swept up in the Internet whirlwind. Stock has benefitted from recent deal struck between America Online and Hughes Electronics (GMH), which operates DIRECTV, to co-market digital entertainment and Internet services. As part of the package, America Online agreed to invest $1.5 bln in DISH. Deal has awakened the investment community to the possibilities of satellite-based broadband Internet access... Late last month, EchoStar Communications boosted its Internet offerings by acquiring broadcast satellite (DBS) assets from News Corp and MCI WorldCom. The new assets give DISH the ability to provide over 500 channels of video and audio programming, Internet/data and HDTV across continental United States... Also doesn't hurt that a number of analysts are pushing the company as a takeover play... Over the past year, DISH shares have rocketed 591% and have rumbled 248% year-to-date. The stock will be splitting 2-for-1 after the close July 19... Estimates: Don't expect DISH to climb out of the red for several years. Analysts currently expecting losses of $7.69 in 1999 and $4.18 in 2000... Of the 12 analysts following the stock, 8 rate it a "strong buy," while 4 have "buy" ratings on the issue. - DS
